A while ago I closed off all comments on this blog, after way too many spam comments. Of course it turns out that switching off comment ability didn’t prevent spam-bots from submitting them to the database anyway, it just stopped them appearing – and filled the DB with thousands of comments “awaiting moderation” – not to mention this “e-mail me to comment” thing was a hassle on me.
So I decided to look at my options again, obviously requiring registration was not sufficient, nor was any of my other previous means of blocking them – but perhaps akismet would be. Of course it’s very hard to actually test whether akismet is actually running (at least without trying to fake a genuine spam which is a special talent I lack), but I did a test comment and it appeared. For now, comments are open again, I’ll keep an eye on it for a few days and see what happens. If I see no spam, I’ll leave them open for good.

Today I installed the newly released PCLinuxOS 2007, a few quick synaptic grabs to get Nvidia installed (note: the default repo has dropped the packages for this – probably because it was getting flooded, just enable some more), and then I used the control center and enabled my Beryl powered 3D desktop… who the hell needs VISTA ?
This is so cool.
For some time now us PCLOS fans have been holding out for this release, which promised some serious cool. It was easy to install, quick to migrate and it retains that sense of fun that I liked about it in the first place (and still has some obvious cases where the way-back-when OL influence does shine through).
So my short review of the new release is: AWESOME.
Only downside is the lack of an easy upgrade – luckily my data is on a sepperate partition, but for people without that it could (unfortunately) be a bit tricky. This however, only influences current PCLOS users. If you are upgrading, please make sure you do a backup first.
Watch out for some exciting OutKast news regarding PCLOS soon to come.

A petition handed to the Mayor of Tswane/Pretoria Father Mkatswa this morning demands the removal of the world famous statue of ZAR President Paul Kruger from Church Square where it has resided for nearly 85 years.
The petition took this long to write since it seems to have been signed by every single resident of Pretoria and about 4000 former residents from around the world.
The demand is simple: Remove oom Paul, we need the space to put a statue for Brian Habana.

This is of course a parody post – just to say well done blue bulls and especially Briantjie. For the sake of my international readership – we’re celebrating the fact that the team from my old hometown became the first every South African winners of the super 14 series.

Flightgear must be one of the best written FOSS games ever done. This is not just an entertaining flight simulator game… it’s considdered one of the most realistic pieces of flight simulation software ever done – in fact it is used for real flight simulation research projects.

So how come nobody plays it ? Why do people still spend a fortune on Microsoft Flight Simulator instead ? Because this great piece of software… well it lacks finish. When you start it, you are sitting in a cockpit – there is no simple graphical way to select your airoplane or airport quickly – and selecting a new airport from the ingame menu leaves you stranded in a lake unable to move… not pretty.
What would flightgear need to become the leader in the industry it deserves to be ? Well for starters you should not need to spend hours trying to build third-party launch tools with esoteric (and unlisted) dependencies in the hope of having a quick way to select a plane (how many new users will realise that you CAN select your plane if the only time this is possible is with a commandline option… and the command line won’t even list the airports – so you don’t know how to enter those…)

So let’s assume flightgear adds this launch control, so new-to-flightsims people like me don’t end up in a cockpit wondering where I am or what is going on – let alone what plane this is… it still doesn’t quite cut it.
Right of the bat two things are obviously missing.
1) I cannot find a way to switch to fullscreen mode… I am supposed to fly a virtual plane while I have half my desktop in my line of sight… talk about breaking the fourth wall of realism.
2) The only way to learn the game it seems is to read long (third-party) docs explaining lots of aircraft theory with the keyboard equivalents to various dials and switches hidden within the text…

Would it be that hard to write a tutorial mode ? That runs you with onscreen instructions through your first flight, take-off to landing, maybe a few of those, each one doing progressively more advanced parts of the process – heck even the oversimplified fighter-plane sim GL-117 has a tutorial mode.

My conclusion – flightgear is an absolutely amazing flight simulator for all existing fans of flight simulators – for those new to the genre… it’s just not good enough.
And this is what is wrong with FOSS games in general. The moment a FOSS game becomes even slightly ambitious… it focusses everything on getting the gameplay perfect, and does absolutely nothing about the finish. When the sounds and artwork are up to scratch (as it definitely is in flightgear – where the scenery is based on actual GIS data) – it still lacks those little “enter our world easy” bits that set the current set of proprietory games into a league of their own.
It should be hard to play a game (or there is no point) – but it should be easy to get started (or there is no motivation) – this is not a new concept, or even unique to computers.
Classic game inventors have always said the greatest praise a game can receive is if it “takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master”… FOSS games need to start pursuing this goal. There are some very talented people doing FOSS games now… a few small steps and FOSS can start to truly challenge the proprietory monsters, but until and unless we acknowledge those shortcomings and address them, FOSS will always be the gaming underdog.

Eisbein as everyone knows, is a German classic. Properly done it is crispy on the outside, and soft on
the inside. I chose to make mine my own way however, which was soft all the way through. Not very
German I guess, but very tasty for sure.

Ingredients:
1 smoked Eisbein
2 giant black mushrooms
2 cups of wild berry fruit juice (make sure it’s real juice – not sugar water)
2 large onions
6 small potatoes
2 baby marrows
2 garlic cubes
2 bunches of parsley
2 table-spoons extra virgin olive oil.
3 chives

Method:
Preheat the oven to 160 degrees.
Slice the garlic cubes in thin slices about 2mm thick. Stab the eisbein with a pairing knife and stab
the garlic slices into it. Because eisbein is elastic it can hard to stuff, so I suggest keeping the knife in
the hole and then pushing it sideways and sliding the garlic in behind the blade.
Clean and slice the baby marrows into chunks about 4cm long. Cut the onions into quarters. Slice the
mushrooms into strips about 2cm wide.
Put the extra-virgin olive oil into an oven pan breadpan worked fine for me) and stack the onions,
potatoes, marrows and mushrooms strips around the Eisbein inside the pan.. Sprinkle with fresh-ground
black pepper, ground cloves and barbeque-spice mixture.
Pour the fruit-juice in a bowl and microwave for 2 minutes on high (this is important, never put cold liquid
on meat as it makes it tough). Pour the semi-boiling juice over the content of the pan, it should be it
about 1cm deep at the bottom.
Chop up the chives and parsley and sprinkle over the top of the meal.

Cover the whole thing with tin-foil, shiny-side on the inside.
Place in the oven and leave to cook for 2 and a half hours. At this point change the temperature of the
oven up to 220 degrees and cook for 1 hour. Finally switch the heat down to 100 degrees and cook for
another half-hour, serve hot. Be carefull taking it out – when you lift the foil, you can expect a lot of
steam.
